The scale-only trap
You’ve been told to learn your scales, but the music is still missing. By falling back on finger shapes and muscle-memory licks instead of hearing the harmony, your improvisation feels mechanical and repetitive rather than musical.
Aimless noodling
You improvise and it’s "fine," but it goes nowhere. Without intentional targets or accountability for every note you play, your solo feels like a series of disconnected phrases—just motion without a purposeful statement.
Chord tone blindness
Chord tones spell out the harmony for the listener, yet you’re missing the "grounded" notes that define the changes. Without targeting these pillars, the harmonic structure of your solo remains invisible and aimless.
